Art Activity: Closet Monsters

For this art activity we gave the children scratch art paper in the shape of monsters, crayons, glue and a large piece of paper folded in half.  The children used a stick to scratch the monster shapes to reveal colors underneath.  The children used the crayons to decorate their folded paper to make a closet door.  The children then glued their monsters to the inside of the folded paper to make monster in a closet.

Story Book for December 10, 2008

Our story book for December 10th was There's a Nightmare in My Closet by Mercer Mayer.  This is the story of a little boy who discovers a Monster living in his closet.  The little boy is first afraid of the monster, but then decides to face his fears and confront the monster.

Language Activity: Assemble the Mummy

For this language activity the children had to identify the body parts of the mummy and then assemble the mummy correctly.

Art Activity: Monster Puppets

For this art activity we gave the children paper lunch sacks, glue sticks, and paper cut into shapes of eyes, noses, mouths, teeth, and ears.  The children used the materials to create monster puppets.

Math Activity: Monster Match

We used pictures of monsters from the book Where the Wild Things Are to make a memory matching game.  The children had to use their memory and visual discrimination skills to find the monsters that were the same.

Art Activity: Monster Crowns

For this art activity we gave the children wide strips of paper, stickers, paper shapes, self adhesive gems, and tape.  The children used the materials to make crowns like the one worn by Max in the story Where the Wild Things Are.

Story Book for December 8, 2008

Our story book for December 8th was Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.  This is the story of a boy named Max who, after causing some mischief, is sent to his room.  His room transforms into a forest, he sails to the land of the Wild Things, and is made King of All Wild Things.  This story is a must have for every child's book collection.
