Woodworking Activity: Making an Instrument

The children made a home made instrument at the woodworking table on this day. First they used the hand drill to make pilot holes in the wood.
Next they inserted screw eye bolts into the wood.
Next, rubber bands were attached to all of the screw eye bolts to make a string instrument.

Woodworking: Car Crush

For this activity we placed Hotwheels cars into a vice and let the children smash them with a hammer.  This was a fun way to give the children some practice using a hammer.

Woodworking Activity: Fix the House

On this day we made some repairs on the roof of our wooden doll house.  The roof of the doll house was starting to come apart.  The kids used small, child size hammers to hammer small nails into the roof of the house.  With everyone chipping in, we were able to make the repairs in just an hour or so.  We always wear safety googles when we do woodworking activities.

Woodworking: Go Away Monsters

For this woodworking activity, the teachers first drew pictures of monsters on little blocks of wood.  The children then used sandpaper to rub across the wood until the pictures of the monster disappeared.

Woodworking Activity: Styrofoam Hammering

For our woodworking activity this past week, the children hammered golf tees into styrofoam blocks.  This is a good activity for those children who may not yet have the strength to hammer nails into wood.

Woodworking Activity: Class Sculpture

For our woodworking activity this past week we made a class sculpture.  The children used a hammer to nail various items to a piece of wood.  After all the children were finished hammering, the teachers spray painted the entire sculpture blue.  We now have a unique piece of artwork hanging in our classroom.

Woodworking: Sanding Sneetch Stars

Our woodworking activity for the Dr. Seuss unit was Sanding Sneetch Stars.  In the story of the Sneetches, the Star Bellied Sneetches had to go through a special machine to make their stars go away.  We let the children use sandpaper to remove colored stars from a piece of wood.  We wrapped the sandpaper around wooden blocks to make it easier for the children to use.  As with every woodworking activity, the children wore safety googles to help protect their eyes.
