Story Book for January 5, 2008

Our story book for January 5th was What is a Fish? by Bobbie Kalman.  This is a non-fiction book that introduces fish to the children.  It discusses types of fish, their anatomy, reproduction, habitats and diet.  This book features great photographs of real fish for the children to see.

Art Activity: Glow in the Dark Monsters

We gave the children glow in the dark crayons, regular crayons, and glow in the dark stickers for this art activity.  The children first colored a monster shape with the glow in the dark crayons.  Next, they decorated the rest of their paper with the other materials.  When the lights go out, the monster will glow in the dark.

Story Book for December 18, 2008

Our story book for December 18th was The Monster that Glowed in the Dark by Annie Ingle.  A little girl has mysterious monster that lives in her home.  No one can see it until the lights go out, and it glows in the dark.

Art Activity: Monster Mask

For this art activity we gave the children colored paper masks to decorate.  The children used the homemade glue they made the day before, patterned paper, and tissue paper to decorate their masks

Story Book for December 17, 2008

Our story book for December 17th was BOO! by Robert Munsch.  In this story a boy paints his face for Halloween.  His make up is so scary that people fall right over or run away.

Science Activity: Home Made Glue

We found a recipe for Homemade Glue and decided to give it a try.  The children help mix all the ingredients for the glue.  We added food coloring to make it more fun.  We used the glue for our art activity the following day.

Art: Scarecrow Puppets

First we had the children decorate cardboard tubes with stickers and paint daubers.   Afterwards we gave them scarecrows on sticks to use as puppets.  The children can put the scarecrows inside their tubes and make them move by manipulating the sticks.
